*sigh* Some stupid kid was racing some other stupid kid. And he died because of it. Way to be a moron. Darwinism works, sometimes.
A Fairbanks teenager died Sunday night in a vehicle accident on the Richardson Highway, which police say may have been caused by a race that reached speeds of close to 100 mph.
Riley August Brand, 16, was pronounced dead at the scene after the Toyota Scion he was driving struck the fender of a truck as he was changing lanes near Fort Wainwright, according to a Fairbanks Police Department news release.
The accident is the second car crash in less than a week to claim the life of a local teenager. A North Pole teen died Wednesday in an accident on the Mitchell Expressway, and a North Pole man died two days later as a result of injuries he sustained in that accident.
Witnesses reported the Scion and a black or dark-colored vehicle were possibly racing in the area, and the Scion was speeding and swerving in and out of lanes. Police believe the car was traveling at about 95 mph at the time of the accident.
The Scion flipped onto its roof and rotated in the air several times before landing on the median, according to police. Both Brand and a 17-year-old passenger were ejected from the vehicle. The passenger, whose name has not been released, was pinned underneath the vehicle and taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. As of Monday the passenger was listed in satisfactory condition.
Fairbanks police had previously cited Brand and another dark-colored vehicle for racing in September. In that case, the speeds of the vehicles were reported to have exceeded 100 mph while in a construction zone. Police are investigating any connection between the two incidents.
