This is the performance of Samsung 840 Pro SSD drive in the new laptop I bought.
Here's how the mechanical drive (that came with the laptop) compares. It's actually better than I expected. Note that the scale is different from the one above.
So, the SSD tops out at around 550 MB/sec on reads, and 350 MB/sec on writes. The mechanical drive reaches over 150 MB/sec on reads and over 100 MB/sec on writes. The SSD is therefore over 3x faster than the mechanical drive, as far as these tests show.
So then I thought it would be fun to benchmark the performance of my USB drive, a 16 GB Flash Voyager supporting USB 3.0.
This was the performance on my old laptop that only has USB 2.0 ports.
And this was the performance on the new laptop with USB 3.0 ports.
What I notice is that write speeds are no different, so that must be the top speed of the drive: around 23 MB/sec. But for read speeds, the drive could not reach 30 MB/sec on a USB 2.0 port, but it reached 80 MB/sec on a 3.0 port. This shows the advantage of USB 3.0.
