Tell me about cool apps! Personally, mine is an Android household, but you Applers are welcome to respond as well.
Ruzzle - my wife and I play this all the time. Given a grid of letters, you just trace as many words as you can with your fingers before time runs out. It's rather addictive.
Osmos - this is a unique game where you control a cell-like blob in space by tapping behind it. This causes it to expel some material as it accelerates opposite your touch. You eat smaller blobs to grow, or be eaten by larger ones. There are a variety of challenges. I've linked the free demo version.
World of Goo - another quirky game where you build structures using goo balls in order to reach a pipe. There are a variety of obstacles and challenges to deal with. The graphics are really stunning. I've linked the free demo.
Stick Stunt Biker - game where you control a little dude on a bike in a 2D pencil line art world. Controls are super simple (accelerate or brake), but you have to really finesse them to prevent your dude from wiping out.
Beyond games...
Screen Filter - I don't understand why phones and tablets tend to be too bright even on their dimmest settings. You'd think they'd go quite dim in order to maximize battery life. Alas, they don't. But Screen Filter basically puts a digital shade into effect over your screen with an adjustable level of opacity--this makes the screen appear dimmer than the device can go. It doesn't interfere with your use of the device at all. I turn this on all the time at night.
Color Note - create color-coded to-do lists and alert reminders. This has proven very handy for me. I set it to remind me of all sorts of stuff.
That's all for now. =)
