Disable that pesky "core parking" feature in Windows 7, to get a pretty significant performance boost with multi-core processors.
See the thread here.
Windows 7 microstutter fix - Core Parking
But I did it the way that johnspack did it, using his post:

Apparently, Microsoft recently released a Hotfix to selectively disable it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2646060 but only for certain chips.
The regegit to get the option in the advanced panel of power options, worked for me (AMD A6 3420M Quad Core). It really does boost performance. I looked up core management because I noticed I'd have spikes in the cores while other cores would seem dormant, while I was converting stuff (and it was supposed to be utilizing all 4 cores), or unzipping something with 7-zip.
Proceed with caution, for advanced users only.
