Posted by 79 at 8:16pm Mar 5 '11her laptop (veeery old) is basically dead. i convinced her to go the desktop route - she almost exclusively uses a docking station already. i'm going to my parents' place over spring break, so i'll put it together while i'm down there.
after all the fur settled, here's what we decided on:
AMD Athalon II 3.3Ghz dual-core
Asus MB w/ onboard video
Samsung HD 1TB
HP cd/dvd burner
Antec 500W PSU
corsair 4G (2x2G) ddr3 ram
Apevia telstar case
yeah, the case is the weird bit. but she liked it better than a standard antec, which surprised me when i sent her a list. more expensive, too, but i guess she thinks it's spiffy. and she was into the clear side panel, which also surprised me, but hey, why not? and i don't mind it being a bit bigger than the others, since i'm the one who's going to have myself elbows-deep in it.
as you've probably noticed, this is very much a starter desktop. lots and lots of headroom for expansion and upgrades later. and yeah, i didn't even go for a graphics card - the most she does is look at pictures, and prefers low res. because of the docking station, she's already got all the peripherals. we'll slap 7 on it and she'll be good to go.
