so last night i went into the storage closet and went through a couple boxes that i'd noticed yesterday contained cables. i love cables, and i'd been missing some important ones (eg a dual female mono 1/4" to male stereo 1/4" with a female stereo 1/4" to male 1/8" - audio cables) as well as not having enough other standard cables (i knew i had more C5e and usb cables). so i found a bunch of them, another extention cord, and a bunch of other neat stuff.
that neat stuff includes two logitch usb game controllers:

my question here - how can i make the most of these? i mean some games don't recognize them (UT2K4), some games act weird (Portal is fine with everything except look up/look down, which it refuses to recognize except from the mouse). the latest driver set/setup program includes profiles for various games such as L4D, but doesn't seem very happy with others - and you have to specifically bind controller buttons to game-specific functions instead of generic keyboard-style input (eg, button 5 doesn't map to a button, but to, say, "use health" or "voice chat").
anyone got any ideas on bypassing it, or perhaps some firmware crack would let it map specifically to keyboard keys, like my programmable set of G-keys on my keyboard?
the keys on the far left can be set for single buttons or button combinations (alt+shift+F5 or whatever).
second, i found an infrared receiver and remote controller that came with my Vaio. since that laptop is used 90% of the time as a VCR (torrents + s-video cable), i'd love to be able to use it. similar to this one;
i've since installed a new OS, etc, and will probably up it to W7 soon (it's running a stripped-down version of Vista now, which may be the problem - i know that version of vista doesn't like printers, for example). god knows where the original driver cds for that stuff are.
a quick search for the infrared receiver part,
,
yielded pretty much nada. windows couldn't find any drivers for it. so, like i said, maybe it's the tweaked OS, i dunno.
the laptop came with the full media suite (the one i wanted didn't come without it), including a coax jack in back, included usb antenna for broadcast, etc etc. do i need to reinstall all those drivers and software to get it working again?
