On my forum I've got Gears storing local copies of all the pictures and CSS files. I know that WordPress has an option to use Gears for the Admin side of things.
I've tried using the free CoralCDN but it is more for large files not small icons.
I don't get enough traffic to bother paying for something like Amazon even though it would speed things up a bit, especially for 4cache.net. I might trial it out later though, Dreamhost has an API to talk with Amazon to help get setup.
