Pick out my computer

I am in need of a laptop, and since know little to nothing about computers, and feel that I am totally inadequate to make this decision for myself. This is where you come in. Please tell me what I need! I'll give you the down low;

I already have a behemoth of a laptop. It is a dell Inspiron 9300 with more heft to it than I ever, ever needed. My father bought it without consulting me, so don't laugh at me for whining about how ill suited it is to my needs. I had no input! But as it is, I don't take it off of my desk because the 17'' display is so burdensome. I can't imagine hauling this thing to class. I'd be paralyzed.

The reason I need a new computer is I have GOT to have a portable computer that I can take to class, meetings, and work. I am destroying several hundred acres of rainforest each year with the amount of paper I go through taking notes. I type faster than I write, so I could take decent notes in my very information laden classes, as well as get work done between classes. I want a small computer that is quiet, dependable, lightweight, and capable of writing a paper or two on. Inexpensive is also another requirement. Part of me is tempted to go ahead and get a macbook and give this 17'' behemoth to my little brother, but I don't know if macs are really all they are cracked up to be... also, I have no idea if my printer and other external devices would work with a mac.

So I'm clueless and babbling at this point. Enlighten me, please?
