Those would be my two choices if I was looking for a "prosumer" camera right now.
Something like a Sony Alpha DSLR would be ok too. At least with those you can find some killer deals on old Minolta glass. Sony manufactures the sensors in Nikon DSLR's but for some reason Nikon is better at performance with those same sensors.
Canon has cheaper lenses and great white balance, and Nikon has amazing metering and autofocus.
Do NOT get the Nikon d3000, as [private] suggested. I have that camera. Old CCD rather than CMOS sensor, and even the D3100 improved low-light photography considerably.
