Alaska will go down in history as the fourth state to legalize it. Solely because while our polls closed at the same time, Oregon's time zone is one hour ahead of ours!

On the other hand, Alaska's "sweeping pro-marijuana legalization" is actually far less sweeping than it seems at first blush, since personal possession and use has been legal here since 1975!! (And I don't mean that half-assed medical shit, neither.) The only thing different now is that we can legally buy the marijuana we've been able to possess and use.

So, really, we were the first -- by 4 decades! Suck on that, Colorado! :P

Didn't know that? Here's the executive summary:
* 1975: In Ravin v. State, the Alaska Supreme Court ruled that the constitutional right to privacy protected the individual's use to possess and use small amounts of marijuana.
* 1990: Voters pass a ballot measure to recriminalize MJ (to date the only state to ever criminalize MJ more than once!).
* 2003: Noy v. State: The Court of Appeals ruled that ballot measures are still subject to constitutional limits (no shit!), thereby effectively returning us to post-Ravin v. State.
* 2006: State legislature amends the 1990 measure to reduce the allowed amount to 1 ounce; no court has yet considered/reviewed this measure.
* 2014: Well, you just gave us this run-down -- but Alaska was still first, bitches!!!

So, really, Alaska has legalized MJ three times! [1975, 2003, 2014] Your move, Washington...
