On one hand we know we have a consciousness and a sub-consciousness. So it could be tucked away inside the brain.
Problem with this theory is the brain is relatively solid, there is no room for a ball of energy.
Another theory: same lines at the first; however their is no ball of energy. instead the energy flows alongs a person's nervous system. This has the effect of you can still have a soul that lives on afterwards and explains why you can't find it like a heart or brain.
Another theory has the soul being a part of a person's aura. Something akin to a field around you. Its not really tangible, but anyone who knows something about things like chi can explain this better.
So then where does the soul come from?
The other theory: according to Christian religion life starts at conception. That is when the seed from man/ sperm from male goes into the female and combines.
So your soul, and your offspring's soul reside in 2 parts. Part in the sperm, and part in the eggs. You don't have a soul/life until those 2 parts combine. When they combine it becomes a zygote and grow. you go from 1 cell to a whole human child.
Thats one of the reasons the christian religion has it as sin to masturbate, be gay, or cheat on your spouse. You are wasteing seed, in effect wasting potential children. As it believed that a child needs a mother and father thats how you get it a sin for sleeping with anyone other than your spouse.
This theory also has the side of animals not having souls, as their seed does not make a human's. Although the brain one kinda does, but animals have brains too.
