I'm not much of a comicbook-turned-film fan... Most of them have been disappointments in my book. And let's face it, about the only thing Robert Downey Jr has going for him at this point are those fun photos of him in the courts just before being sent to rehab (again).
This movie was surprising. Not only was Downey a good choice (let's face it... Tony Stark was a drunk and a womanizer, it fits), but so was the rest of the cast, including Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane, and even a cameo at the VERY end (stay past the credits, it's worth it).
The plot was simple. Awakening of the humanity in a very rich and powerful man, the need to see justice done, and the desire that we all have to see it done by our own hand. Don't look for a lot of subtlety in this film, you won't find it. But then, there was never much about Tony Stark that could be described as "subtle".
All in all, a worthy kick-off to the summer film fest that will be 2008. I'm not sure if they'll all be this good, but I have to say I am genuinely impressed... And that doesn't happen in the theaters much these days. :)
