Off the top of my head, here are a few from each category:
My favorites:
Halloween (original)
Psycho (original)
Alien
The Shining
Jaws
Underrated:
Mute Witness
Evil Dead II
The Changeling
Slither
Poltergeist
Overrated
Ju On/Grudge
Suspiria (I like this movie a lot, but it's way overrated)
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Friday the 13th (take your pick)
Saw
It goes without saying*
Phantasm - I'm obligated to mention this one due to sentimental value. Plus, it's the source of my handle...
The funny thing about such lists is that I guarantee that there are people who will put my favorites list into the overrated category or my overrated picks into the underrated category (or vice versa). Ahhh fun.
I'm sure I missed about 50 great movies, so let's hear em:)
