So I first discovered Stirling about a year or two ago when I picked up a copy of Dies The Fire in the bookstore because the cover looked interesting. I bought the book and started reading and couldn't put it down. Since then I have read all of the books in the Emberverse series except the most recent one because I don't have the cash to buy it yet. I am now finally reading the Nantucket trilogy which is closely related to the Emberverse series and I find it just as excellent.

For those who haven't read them the Emberverse series starts in May of 1995. Reports are coming in 0on the news about some strange dome of lights that has appeared over the island of Nantucket and then everyone in the world suddenly sees white and has a sharp pain in the head. When this clears something has "changed." Cars, electronics, even gins no longer work and there is no evidence why. The physical and chemical laws of the world seem to have been completely altered specifically to take out technology. The story follows Mike Havel, who is piloting a small plane over the mountains of Washington taking a rich family to their summer home when the Change hits and he has to crash land then they have to make the trek out and find out what happened, and Juniper McKenzie who is a folk singer singing in a bar when it happens and an airliner crashes in town. She and her daughter and a close friend set off to her small cottage up in the mountains hoping that her friends will know to head there so they can try to get by in the new world they find themselves in. Meanwhile in Portland, Oregon a former history professor and member of the SCA decides he wants to start his own little kingdom ruled with an iron fist under a feudalistic system similar to what you would find in medieval Europe.

The Nantucket series starts at the same time as the Emberverse series and is, obviously, set on the island of Nantucket. At the moment of the Change in the Emberverse series the island is transported back to the year 1250 BC along with a coast guard ship that was visiting the island at the time. Nantucket has to get by in the world and worry about the effects of their presence on history since all of their technology still works and if they want to get by they will have to trade and have contact with a world that has never seen a gun, a metal ship, a steam engine, or for the majority even steel weapons.
