Prophecy, fate, and a helping Hand

Okay, so Gunnar (who before this day had lived his life happily oblivious to the existence of magic, putting his faith firmly in technology and science) has met the Oracle, the Mouth of Prophecy, who has told him that everyone has a destiny ordained in Prophecy. He's been told his destiny (the reason for him being brought before the Oracle in the first place), and now he's getting a more in-depth lesson about Prophecy from an Evocator, a group also called the Hand of Prophecy.

Essentially, the conversation so far has been:
Evocator: "So, you've met the Oracle, heard your fate, now it's time to learn about us, the Hand of Prophecy. You see, everyone is guided by Prophecy, and their destinies are written before they are even born. Occasionally, however, Prophecy needs assistance - that's where we come in: we are the Hand that helps people to their destiny."
Gunnar: "But if a person's destiny is, well, their destiny, why are you even necessary?"
E: "Well, sometimes Prophecy just needs a little help. Certain events are ordained to happen after other events; we make sure the prerequisites are fulfilled. Other times a person tries to fight their destiny; we step in and make sure Prophecy is fulfilled."

Okay, that's where I'm at. Essentially, the problem I'm having is how to explain to someone that Prophecy is unavoidable while at the same time that it occasionally needs help to be that way. This is supposed to be a two-way conversation, and it's a very pivotal scene in Gunnar's character development (how will he react to all this? will be believe it fully and whole-heartedly don the mantle of the Evocators? or will he be doubtful and resist them?). I need help! I've moved on to scenes involving my other main character for now, but this scene needs to be resolved before I can go back to Gunnar because I need to know how he reacted.
