I usually go periods of time drinking coffee and diet soda, then sort of stop for a while... the stopping means having a minor headache (caffeine withdrawals) for a day or so then I'm back to normal. I can tank energy drink after energy drink and be fine except that too much caffeine can make me sleepy.
So in essence, I can use caffeine as an upper and as a downer. Kinda like those shower valves that have only one handle. Turn it too much and it's too hotâdon't turn it enough, and it's too cold.
