I live in the downtown area of a major Canadian city and do you know what I see when I walk out my door? Native people rooting through the dumpster for bottles. Native people outside the grocery store asking for money or food. Native people at the train station asking for train tickets so they can get on the warm train and out of the cold. I bet over 75% of the people living on the street are Native, despite the fact that they're a quite small population of the city overall. Why? Because yes, white people stole their land, put them on reservations, and continue to look down on them and discriminate against them today.
And don't even try to pretend this isn't an issue in Australia, I read the international news, I read blogs based in Australia, I have friends in Australia and I know there's a huge problem with aboriginal poverty and discrimination there.
You can disagree with the specific criticism of Avatar, but criticizing colonialism and racism against Native peoples has nothing to do with living in the past.
