A highly passionate topics for those suchas myself deals with sociology in which we ask ourselves, "Is there sexism in schools?" Many books have been published on this matter such as by doctors Myra and David Sadker. Many claim males get more attention in school than girls linking to the downfall of female grades and male benefiting later on in high school. There seems to be a connection that since boys are less behaving, the teacher includes them more in activities thus giving themmore power of speech and attention.
Boys are more hardy and rough and in school they shout out answers at least highly evident early on. These shouting out of answers makes the teacher focus on them, giving them more confidence as well as more attention.
All this attention to the boys excludes the girls from many topics in class and many studies have proven that even when there are few males in a class, the teacher still focuses on them more than the girls. This exclusion thus lowers their self-esteem and creates a slump for later on in their schooling life.
This rising conflict is emerging hidden above many matters at present. As the teachers think they are doing the right thing when including males in the class and they do this sub consciously as they are doing as how they were taught! This sub-conscious behavior repeats itself time and time again and in many schools, this is a large problem.
Sexism in teaching also spreads to the curriculum. There have been studies in which students must write down 10 famous women. Rarely do students get up to 10 as it is found that in many text books, there are hardly any women to learn about.
As a result of this confidence decline in girls and attention receiving in boys, boys have a superior opinion of themselves and many girls want to become boys as they think they will get treated better yet boys do not want to be a girl at all if they had the chance. One essay was given out that what would you do if you woke up as the opposite sex. This essay statement received positive comments from girls and yet the boys did not want to change at all. One boy was quoted with saying:
"I would stab myself in the heart 50 times with a dull butter knife and if that didn't kill me, I'd run in front of a semi in eighteenth gear and get my brains mashed."
