Putting aside the fact that I remain unconvinced that humans are to blame for climate change, I was pleasantly surprised by some of Al Gore's comments when I saw Letterman's Late Show this morning (the "Late Show" comes on at 8AM in India).
I know what you're thinking - either you're shocked that I might agree with something that came out of Gore's mouth on climate change, or you're waiting for me to describe a catastrophic flub that put epic egg on his face.
Well, it's the former: He all but outright said, The fight against climate change isn't to save the planet, it's to save mankind; if the climate changes dramatically, nature will adapt and persevere, but do so in a way that's hostile to mankind and to civilization as we know it.
It's about damn time someone realized that the planet ain't at risk at all. It's a giant hunk of rock, it'll be hear long after we're gone. Nor is it even the planet's biosphere - fossil records indicate dramatic climate shifts in the past that nature cruised through just fine.
No, the fear over climate change is fear over what will happen to us. Nature will adapt, as anyone with any sense will realize, it will just be in a different form; the fear comes from not knowing what this form will be, not knowing whether or not we will survive it.
