In Maine, a law allowing same sex marriages was struck down by voters in the most recent US elections. It was projected to be a dead heat race, but at this point (97% reporting), its about 53% in favor of striking down the law (which is a large margin in recent US politics). This deals a great setback to gay rights advocates as Maine was seen as one of the most favorable states for same sex marriage. To date, NO state has ratified same sex marriages by voter initiative, only by legislation or judicial decree. This now makes Maine the 31st state where voters have enacted a same sex marriage ban. Why do people feel that this is different than other equal rights movements? Whether or not you believe same sex marriages are a good thing, isn't it their right under the constitution, just as it was for mixed race marriages?
