Jul 22, 2016 — Today, July 22, 2016, is a monumental day in Vaquita conservation history.

The gillnet ban has been made permanent.

Legally, there will never again be a gillnet of any kind in the Vaquita's range.

Today, US President Barack Obama and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto had a meeting and announced a permanent ban on gillnets in the Vaquita's entire range. The press release also includes plans to develop alternative, Vaquita-safe fishing gear for fishermen to continue their careers.

This is exactly what we were hoping for, and we couldn't be any happier with this news! We truly have all the framework in place.

Saving the Vaquita is now purely a matter of strictly enforcing the law.

With the cooperation of the fishermen, cxtizens, and governments of Mexico, US, and China, we truly can save the Vaquita, and set a shining example for conservation all over the world for years to come.

While our work is certainly not done, we should all sit back for a moment and celebrate this enormous victory! Each and every one of you played a huge part in this.

We reached over 96,000 signatures, something that could not be ignored!
