Was a shit decision back then, and it's worse now.
I'm trying to help a friend revive an old gaming laptop someone gave her.
1) Installed new fan. Rig now stays on for more than 15 seconds.
2) Installed new SATA HDD, old one was fucked.
3) Installed Windows 8 (rig originally shipped with Vista HP)
4) Got most things running.
But the fucking graphics card on this thing blows. I have to run the original Vista VGA driver to get native resolution.
DirectX 10 bug fixed, I can finally run winstat all the way through. But the graphics card is still buggier than shit. Not supported by AMD/ATI, it's like they just said "whoops, fuck that card". Asus never updated drivers for that card either, because ATI never did.
Symptoms include, no full screen video on YouTube. Which while terribly annoying not the end of the world, except you know most people like to watch YT in fullscreen.
Not a single OpenGL game will run.
Only 2 screen resolutions possible, sit and native.
I'm stuck using the ATI Catalyst Control Center from 2007, nothing newer will run because the GPU doesn't exist as far as ATI is concerned.
That being said, Win8 is very tolerant with running old shit!
